Park So-Young

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of gender in relation to health-related factors and social networks on depressive symptoms and to investigate the determinants of health-related factors and social networks on depressive symptoms for each gender group based on gender differences in general characteristics. The fifth Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KloSA) was used and the sample was 2,443 elderly women and 1,783 elderly men. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, chi-square test, hierarchical multiple linear regression, and multiple linear regression were used for data analyses. Results of the study were as follow: First, there were gender differences in socio-demographic characteristics, health-related factors, social networks, and depressive symptoms. Second, the moderating effect of gender on the association between chronic disease and depressive symptoms was found to be statistically significant. Third, subjective health status, marital status, contact with friends were the significant factors of predicting depressive symptoms for both elderly men and women. Implications for relieving and preventing depressive symptoms in vulnerable elderly who had poor health status and weak social networks were discussed.
